Something More...

he hadn't been thinking of death
when he flew in

he'd been curious
hungry
snooping around

he hadn't planned on
being trapped
this greenish multiple-eyed
flying machine

I discovered him here
both wings bent backwards
one of them crimped
one of his legs crumpled
now lifeless
and crushed
behind the double-paned window

how many times had he tried
to break through
and then finally
been broken?

fly
you thought you were out,
and made for some grand adventures
yet
here you are
shattered from the effort to return
from whence you came

I'd like to say to you
today how
I was listening to a radio
a program on compassion

is it true when we
listen with our hearts
to creatures who are no less than us
we understand they too
have an intelligence?

are we the ones lacking
in sense
for we have mostly
only sense of ourselves

I feel odd
slightly unsettling
a twinge of recognition
here is a glance
into my own frailty

when I look at this fly
a husk
of what he was before

sorry if I bore you
my audience

but I cannot help but observe
his tenacity
and realize he shares
the same damn stupid lust for life
as me

this has made him
into something more

don't you see?
