     “The Mirror”

Time can be
such a cruel
bitch
she says to
her reflection
as she closely
examines her
face
in the mirror,
her eyes having
picked up
a couple of
lines
since she has
turned forty
but really they
just added
a few more
degrees
to her character,
her skin still
taunt
her little nose
making her eyes
look twice their
size
and when she
flashes
that little girl
smile
the years melt
away
leaving a pixie
like look
behind,
she lets a
little giggle
escape her lips
the young waiter
at dinner
last night
giving her
all the attention
her daughter
kicking her
under the table
when she let
loose
her natural
charm
his nervousness
evident
in every word
as he tries
to recite the
daily specials
and when she
looks up
from her menu
and into his
eyes
all of his parts
freeze up
forgetting his
place
in the recital
of entrées
her daughter
jumps in with
her order
saving the
poor boy
from a prolonged
struggle
with his words,
she looks deep
into the center
of her eyes
thinking back to
the first time
someone
got lost in
them
and they told
her
how much they
loved her
she searches
through
their vivid green
pools
trying to find
that something
deep inside
their color
that seems to
turn their
hearts
into putty
when they
see it
but she couldn’t
find
anything special
hidden in them
other than looking
a little more
tired
since the last
time she checked,
maybe time
hasn’t been
all that nasty
to her
as she dabs
some moisturizer
on to her
face
she still gets
plenty of looks
much to the
chagrin
of her daughter
and she’s willing
to bet
her forty year
old eyes
when looked
deeply into
can still cause
the words
I love you
to drop freely
from someone’s
lips,
she gives herself
a wink
and says with
a smile
while she’s still
looking into
the mirror
“I take it
all back
time,
your not such
a cruel bitch
after all”
as a charismatic
face
glowing of
beauty
and showing
some lines
looks back
at her…
