Someone Burned The Trees

Someone
burned
the
trees
while they stood
living
rooted into the ground

They could not
run
away

Now blackened
and skeletal
their emptied limbs rake at
a blue-blackened sky
in a pantomime of mock escape

It wasn't theirs
to question
nor to ask why
this has happened to them
and receive an answer

But
I would like to know
why

and
who
could do a thing
such as this?
