The Lads

Did you die bravely, lads
Full of spunk and fight:
Did you die disillusioned
In the early dawn light.
Did you die quickly, lads
Mown down by enemy fire,
Or did you die slowly,
Tangled in the barbed wire.

Are you lying with your mates
In this hallowed ground
Or are you amongst strangers
In those graves all around.
Is there a Pals' Valhalla
Where old friends meet
Do you stay in groups my lads
All from the same street

Do you rest easy, lads,
Personal battles won
In that dreamless, endless sleep
Of those whose duty's done.
Now they revere your graves
Treat your memory's with respect:
In death you get more reverence
Than in life you could expect.

And that war that you fought
That war in which you died
Achieved none of the promised
Goals, because as usual they lied.
To me you are all heroes
Who couldn't have given more
Brave and honoured casualties
Of that vile, unnecessary war.
