Chapter Seven
“The Sky above Her”
Zoe sat down
on a broken
plastic patio
chair
in an unlit
section
of the backyard
she was looking
up
at the stars
when the sheer
immensity
of the night sky
made her feel
small and
insignificant
in the scheme
of things
so much out
there
she wanted to
see
and experience
having only
one life
just seems like
nothing but
a tease,
such a small
amount
of time
to try and
go out
and explore
it all
cause this girl
doesn’t want
to miss a
thing,
she was as
free spirited
as a girl
could be
throw in her
age
only being fifteen
and those feelings
of adventure
are magnified
tenfold,
the hot summer
night
was starting to
cool down
as she readjusted
her position
in the plastic
chair
letting her body
slide down
its front
till her head
rested
on the top
of the chair’s
back
her hand now
able to easily
reach
her red plastic
Solo cup
filled with beer
that she had
set
on the ground
next to her
when she had
first sat
down
she brings the
plastic cup
up to her
lips
and takes a big
drink,
Zoe now
well over her
limit
but continuing
to push
against her
boundaries
even while
sitting
in the broken
patio chair,
she sets the
cup
back down
as the only
cloud
in the sky
drifts in front
of the full
moon
it’s ambient
light
gives the
cloud
a bright sliver
lining
with all the
stars
around it
looking like they
were turned on
high,
drawing a little
laugh
out of her
as if the
whole scene
was just too
perfect
to be real
set up for
her
by some cosmic
stage manager
with an artistic
flair
trying to put
something extra
into the
night sky
just for her,
she makes a
conscious effort
to try and
remember
the beauty of
the handcrafted
sky
above her
wanting to save
the image
for some below
average day
that needs a
little
sparkle,
she can hear
the party
going on
behind her
the music and
laughter
that have been
seeking her out
have found her
in that darkened
corner
of the backyard
tempting her
with
the sounds of
youth
and bad decisions
being made
something she
doesn’t want
to be missing
out on,
her one lone
cloud
disappears into
the night
as it finishes
passing through
the back light
of the moon,
she brings the
red Solo cup
up to her
lips
one more
time
finishes her
beer
then pulls
herself
up from the
broken plastic
patio chair
and goes in
search of
her friends…
