Chapter Eight

     “House Party
          the End”

Zoe was making
her way out
of the darkened
corner
of the backyard,
stepping from
the shadows
and into the
bright
indoor lights
of the party,
her eyes
having to adjust
to the sudden
brightness
as her mind
was trying to
conform to
being enclosed
within
four very plain
white walls,
after having
been set free
to roam
in the vastness
of the night sky,
Zoe could tell
something was up
as soon as
a couple of
girls
quickly walked
past her
to get outside,
Zoe overheard
one girl say
“I’m not getting
in the middle
of that,
besides my cup
is empty”
throwing a little
giggle in
at the end
of her sentence,
Zoe took a
sip of beer
more out of
habit
from always
carrying
that plastic
cup
then for a need
of a drink,
Zoe is a little
cautious
as she makes
her way
from the kitchen
to the den
not wanting to
step into a
wild swing
from some drunk
jock,
the party had
started on it’s
downward spiral
at a slow rate
of decay
but a party
this size
won’t take too
long to die,
she’s the only
person in this
big room
other than a
couple sitting
in the corner
not paying
attention
to anything
other than
themselves,
she forgets about
that feeling of
caution
and starts looking
at some
of the pictures
on the wall
one was of a
poster
a Hot blond
in a bikini
holding a beer
with the caption
“one is just
not enough”
with fifty different
beers
on the table
in front of
her,
a common college
type poster
with a subtle
way
of bragging
you drink a lot
she was never
quite sure
if it was meant
to impress other
guys
or a misdirected
attempt
to impress women,
thinking that
a guy that
drinks a lot
of beer
is a big plus
for them
like they need
visible clues
to find a guy
that drinks in
college,
next to the
poster
was a signed
picture
of a 49er cheerleader
both
tacked to the
wall
and both
crooked
they were hard
evidence
there wasn’t a
woman living here,
she thinks about
going back to
the kitchen
and looking in
the refrigerator
if you’re going
to profile someone
the refrigerator
is one of the
best places to
start
next to what
they keep in
their bathroom
drawers
and the bottom
drawer
of the night
stand
by their bed,
but she’s not
back tracking
to the kitchen
or taking a
chance
at getting cornered
alone
in some guys
bedroom,
maybe when she
finds Cathy
and Lace
she can talk
one of them
into sneaking
into one of
the bedrooms
for a quick look,
she laughs to
herself
who is she
kidding,
Cathy would never
do it
even if she
was drunk
and Lace
wouldn’t need any
coxing
to get her
to do it
even if she
was sober,
Zoe looks down
the hall
and sees no one
is in line
at the bathroom
that her and Lace
passed by earlier
so she can
snoop around
in there
with no waiting
plus she really
needs to pee
anyways,
the door is open
an inch
and the light
is on
she lightly taps
on the door
not wanting to
walk in on
anything
she couldn’t
un-forget later
she gives the
door a push
and peeks
around the corner
of it
all’s clear
but as she steps
in
she hears
her name
not a scream
more of a short
shout
but she can
tell
it’s Cathy’s voice
so she hollers back
“Cathy,
down here
by the bathroom”
Cathy quickly
walks up
“Zoe,
I think we better
get Lace
out of here,
before she gets us
in some real trouble”
says Cathy
not in a panicked
voice
but back to her
“Here we go Again”
voice,
“Right Now”
says Zoe
who was
still hoping to
use the bathroom,
“Yes Now!”
commands Cathy
“she caught up
to the guy
with the blue eyes
and his girlfriend
didn’t much care
to hear Lace’s
breakdown of
how her boyfriend
earned a nine”,
Cathy grabbed Zoe’s
hand
pulling her down
the hall to
the living room
where they see
Lace arguing with
two girls
as the blue eyed
guy
is trying to
back out of
the whole mess,
Zoe askes
“which one is
the girlfriend?”
Cathy points at
the much bigger
of the two girls,
Zoe shakes her
head
and tells Cathy
to go get the
car
and meet them
out front,
Cathy heads for
the door
as both girls
get right up
in Lace’s face
till Lace says
something to
both girls
that Zoe can’t
hear
but it was the
“F--- You Look”
on her face
that caused
both girls to
snap
and then pounce
on her,
Zoe
doesn’t hesitate
she drops her
cup
and charges
into the melee
throwing her body
and all the
force
she can generate
in that short
distance
into the biggest
girl
sending the whole
pile down on
top of a coffee
table,
Zoe
the smallest of
the four girls
was trying to
hold her own,
swinging
and kicking
at anything she
could get within
reach of
trying to separate
herself from
the tangled mass,
her size
putting her at
a great disadvantage
she needs to
get to her feet
where she can
put her quickness
and dexterity
to use,
the sounds of
the coffee table
snapping
and high pitched
screams
of obscenities
brought the whole
party
into the room,
Zoe took a
stinging fist
to the face
right above her
left eye
stunning her
for a moment
and leaving her
feeling very
woozy
then she felt
someone
grab the back
of her jeans
and pull her up
and off of the pile,
she tried to swing
at whatever
was behind her
but couldn’t
connect with anything
once she was
on her feet
she could see
it was the tan
Hulk’s
large hand
that had a hold
of her,
as a couple of
more guys got
between the
other girls
and stopped the
fight
but unable to
silence
the screaming,
Zoe’s head
spinning now
her balance
off
as the party’s
pissed off host
is trying to
cut through the
screaming
and tell Zoe
and Lace
they have to
leave,
Lace grabs Zoe
and helps her
along
Zoe calls out
over her shoulder
to the tan Hulk
“Thanks Bro”
Zoe tries to
walk
as straight as
she can
as her and
Lace
head for the
door
but Zoe keeps
brushing
up against
the walls
as she goes,
her head
pounding
as Lace helps
her through
the front door
which is feeling
very narrow
to her right now
and hard to
navigate,
Zoe takes a
red plastic
Solo cup
off the table
by the door
before both girls
squeeze through it
side by side
on to the empty
front lawn
right as Cathy
drives up
Lace opens the
car door
and pulls the
seat up
so Zoe can
climb into the
backseat,
Lace then gets in
as Cathy starts
driving,
“What the hell happened?”
asked Cathy,
“I think you guys
were right”
says Lace,
“he really was
just an eight,
not a nine”
Zoe then
weakly says
from the backseat
“hey guys,
let’s find
another party”
both girls just
laugh,
as Zoe
leans her head
against the
small backseat
window
her eyes
blankly watching
the fuzzy lights
of the city
flash by
till at some
point
when she falls
asleep
still holding
her empty
red plastic
Solo cup…
