     “Heading Home“

She’s out
the door
into San Jose’s
bright summer
sun
she never gets
much sleep
at fifteen
there’s too
much
life going on
to ever catch up
on it
but the sun
has a way
with her
she is able
to tap into
it’s energy
like a rocket
taking on fuel,
she makes her
way
towards one
of the bigger
surface streets
one that is on
the bus line
so she can
at least
get to her
side of the
San Jose valley
a little closer
to home
just on the
off chance
she decides to
drop in
there today
maybe let her
dad
see her face
after a hot
shower
and change of
clothes
before she starts
chasing
some new
adventure
that she
knows
is just starting
some place
else
in the valley,
she takes a
seat
at a bus stop
bench
taking in the
morning
hustle
of the daily
commuters
having somewhere
they
have to be
by a specific
time
while she is
bound
by nothing more
than a few
random texts
to her dad
letting him know
she’s still staying
at a friend’s house
in a sense
this is giving
her a passkey
to what ever
fun
and trouble
mix
she can find
out here in
the valley,
a couple of
skateboarders
coming up on
her
and the bench
she is sitting
on
try and get
her attention
do a few
tricks
as they approach
and once
they are able
to catch her
eye
they both
try and look
solid
as they roll
past her
turning their
heads
in unison
and giving her
a nod
as if they are
just now taking
notice of her
she gives them
a casual nod
back
as the bus
pulls up
one of them
calling after
her
for her number
as she acts
like
she can’t hear
him
before stepping
onto the
bus
and using her
VTA’s Summer Youth Pass,
the ride is
slow going
stopping at every
corner
to pick up
or drop off
people,
30-minutes
later
she feels like
her progress
has been
minimal
at best
she checks the
bus schedule
and finds an
express route
that has a
lot less stops
coming through
in thirty minutes
and one of
those stops
is near a
large bookstore
she had been
to sometime
before
so she decides
to check it
out
and stretch her
long legs
letting them
remember
what it’s like
to support
her weight in
black booties
instead of her
usual choice of
Vans High Tops,
she stands in
the center isle
of the bus
waiting for her
stop
to come up
multiple heads
look up
at her
as she makes
her presence
known
after having
been
hidden among
the seats
due to her
short stature
a couple of
the guys
surprised to find
this short haired
beauty
had been on
their bus
this whole time
she takes in
each smile
as she walks
to the front
of the bus
even giving
one guy
a slight look
of interest
as she walks
by him
and then jumps
from
the steps of
the bus
and back
into the hot
San Jose sun…
