Disabled Veteran

It's easy to ignore him,
Not take note of his stress,
Just write off his sense of
Helplessness and distress.
He's got both arms and legs
Physically his body is whole
But what doesn't show
Is the damage to his soul.

He has two ears and eyes
So he both sees and hears
But what doesn't show
Are his deeply hidden fears.
He can laugh and he can smile.
To the world at large he's whole
Deep down inside there's damage
To both his mind and soul.

He can walk, and he can talk
He can laugh and he can smile
But deep down in his mind
He's gone that extra mile.
Though in appearance
He's complete and whole
You just can't see
Damage to a mind or soul.

Disability isn't just physical,
Very easily to see and accept
It can also be a state of mind
And that's a different concept.
He's done it in your service
He has a right to expect
Some help and understanding
Consideration and respect.
