Like a Small Child Tucked Into

*****
the heavens
are an azure bowl
as I fall upwards
into a cool bedspread of stars
Night
should be like this
with the wind whispering secrets
and humming softly the answers
to all my prayers

in deep purple sleep
I'm cloaked within it all
the blue, the stars, the sky
then rock-a-bye'd gently
near the top of a towering mountain
into the world where I was born

so very much
like a small child
tucked into the crook
of the broad meaty arms
of the Mother.

This is magical thinking, of course. For my own Mother is long gone
and we weren't close in that way.  I am thinking of the mountainous
area where I was born. It is good to imagine this, as now is the
summer of our discontent. Great heat and too much tinkering going
on in the place where we live...construction and meanness and discounting
of basic human dignities. To re-imagine a cool aerie (nest) in the mountains
has to do me some good.
