     “Remember to Forget”

Why did she
have to
do it
pop back in
to his life
for a sixty
second encore
even if it
was
in what she
called
a very trivial
way,
he was coming
up on
six months
clean
from her
presence
he’d like
to say
he was completely
over her
that he had
forgotten that
look
she carries
deep in her
emerald green
eyes,
but the truth
was so far
from that
he couldn’t
even
lie to himself
he hadn’t
gone
a day
during that
dark stretch
of time
without giving
her
his thoughts,
on good days
snapping together
a few blank
hours
in a consecutive
fashion
without her
form present
was a major
victory
in his war
to forget
her lines,
he hopelessly
tried
to change
the angle of
his mind
get it pointed
back
in her direction
to the happier
times
when everything
about her
was so beautiful
taking him
on such a
high
he could almost
touch the sun
just by being
around her,
for him
thinking about
her
was like
playing a
favorite song
her image
echoing
in his mind
as he went
through his
day
her face
stuck on repeat
on the inside
of his brain,
his thoughts
of her
were innocent
ones
with their biggest
anticipated
conquest
being
when he was
able to capture
one of her
wild smiles,
but that was
all turned to
black
on that day
she closed her
life
to him
and stepped
out of his
world
taking the
childlike innocence
that was attached
to his thoughts
with her
replacing what
she had taken
with the
sharpened
edge
of betrayal,
causing a
mutilation
of his mind
each time a
thought of her
escapes
from its cage
and runs
loose
through his
head
leaving behind
a thousand
little cuts
a slow emotional
death
going on inside
of him,
choking now
on memories
he couldn’t
go a day
without before
ones that
he can
ill afford
to lose
making up
some of his
most personal
moments
over
the last few
years,
he was unable
to simply delete
them
from his being
she was just
to extraordinary
to ever
conveniently
forget
maybe he’ll
find a
way
in some distant
tomorrow
to separate
her
best parts
from the pain
he’s feeling
anytime her
name
is even whispered
in the wind,
this chance
encounter
that put his
whole world
back on
tilt
reminding him
how little
progress
he has made
of breaking free
from her
shadow
still unable
to find
a way out
of the darkness
he’s struggling
to live in…
