“He Wanted Out”
He just wanted
out
to find an
unmarked
exit
in time
that this cynical
world
had forgotten
to lock,
he was tired
of going through
the exact same
unchanging motions
every day
of what he
wishes
added up
in some way
to a life
but no matter
how he pushes
the math around
on the page
in his eyes
the numbers
that do fall
out
don’t reflect
back
much of
anything
at all
certainly not
a life,
he couldn’t find
a point
in anything
he did
he was starting
to believe
life was just
one big con
trying to keep
you busy
and out of
the way
till you die
then only
to just
brush you
aside
as time
marched on,
graduating
college
turned out
to be nothing
more
then finding
your place
on life’s
seating chart
where you’ll
sit
as you watch
your world
unravel
till theirs
nothing left
but a short
ribbon of
time
leaving you
much too old
to fight for
change
or live in
the beauty
of a carefree
youth,
lost amid
all the others
stuck in the
same
unseen mass
of disposable
people
waiting for life
to spit them
out
once it has
chewed off
all the sweet
meat
leaving just
the fat,
bones
and dreams
behind,
is death to
be feared
or welcomed
he wondered
the only
guaranteed
change
for him
that he could
see
comes at the
very end
of his ride
too late
to be enjoyed
or to be
avoided,
unable to find
an unmarked
exit
for his escape
he slides his
timecard
under the
eye
of the infrared
scanner
and clocks in
for work
as another
eight and half
hours
of his life
slips away…
