 ramblings and things

Twixt Now And Then

Eight Senior citizens reunited
In a place of their teens
Reliving cherished memories
In their original scenes.

A village much changed but
Still some unchanged places,
Making allowance for age while
Looking for old familiar faces.
Too many years since they
Were all here together last
Too much has happened,
Too much time passed.
The reunion pub now a hotel
Almost doubled in size
But still a cherished place
Through sentiment's Eyes.

My lover's house has gone,
That place of such delight
Where I would quietly creep in
To spend many an illicit night.
I don't want to meet her now
Too much time has moved on
Old age will have marred her,
My young lover will have gone,
So I stand looking fondly at the
Old house's now empty space
And then, with my eyes closed,
Have full recall of her face.

This village helped me grow
Into the man I  became
And these now Senior Citizens
All helped me do  the same.
Nearly fifty years now since
We all last met, and it was here,
And in that same though different
Bar we all drink a farewell beer.
It's uncertain if we'll all ever.
Be together any time again:
It was nice chat about now and
How things were way back then

And then the taxi comes
For our return journeys to start
And so it's off to the Bahnhoff
Where we shake hands and depart.
