Evidence

inside my pocket book
there is
a picture of us
in black and white
smiling in a booth
at the beach town arcade
in Oregon
what a place it is
the beach
but it wouldn't mean much
to go there
without you
little star
the light you are to me

inside my pocket book
there is a note
a snippet of advice
that is my small paradise
from a man I never met
named Robert Alden
he tells me there is not enough
darkness in all of the world
to snuff out my one small candle

recently there have been many days like this
an unending baker's dozen
that come delivered unwanted
I remember too then to turn the piece of paper over
and read the other side
where in my own hand it reads
for you my candle, Melissa
with love
always,
God.

evidence to the contrary
and how it hides
in the smallest corners
and spaces

I am not alone
and will never be
and twice I am reminded...now
I must remember this.

P.S. I thank my friend Joe for inspiration
and his nudging of my failing memory
and his enduring and endearing poem about the candle
in the darkness. Thank you Joe. Thank you for being my friend.
