It Comes At Night

********

so here you are
the room is dark
it lacks the comforting familiar smells
they've left you
here
with
the
Monster

you hear them speaking
in lowered voices

time moves forward
but doesn't pass
you wait them out
each and every moment
is a the tongue of dread
which speaks no words

how did this happen
you let your seams
rip and show
have you tried too long
to hide
from the Monster

you know It
you call Him pain
He's not a friend
but He's very persistent
how He's moved on in
turned your body
into His own personal workout:
your nerves misfire
burn and sere
becoming barbed wire
as they pinch and twist into
boring deep jolts
of sinuous rapid electricity

writing this all down now
has become a prayer of intercession

no more pretense
and pretending to be
someone you cannot be
the brave mask must go back
to the store
you will not wear it anymore

in the past
when It came at night
the Monster chewed you up
you were terrified

you decide
here in the darkness
its quiet enough for you to find yourself again
and surrender

the kind voices are now
just outside the gleaming door
and so
might be
an answer.
