“Hard Look”
You could easily
mistake her
for one of
the boys
if it wasn’t
for the slim
outline of her
body,
her attitude
and disposition
gives her the
appearance
of being on
the verge of
a fight
and if you
knew her
personally
you knew then
that was always
a strong possibility,
she squared up
her shoulders
at the first
sign of a
confrontation
be it physical
or verbal
staring into your
eyes
as she speaks
to you
ready to back-up
any words that
she throws out
at you,
her face when
made hard
would make most
men
walk away
and call it
good
not wanting to
play against those
unpredictable odds
she staked
in anything
she was involved
in,
she puts all
her drive
and dedication
into anything
she sets her
mind to
for her
competitiveness
is part of
her nature
a trait she
couldn’t keep
buried
even if she
wanted to,
she never found
the need
to inject herself
into the current
conversation
just to feel
like
she was part
of the reading
circle
unless of course
you made a
nasty remark
about her beloved
Packers
football team
then all bets
were off,
but once you
got her talking
letting her see
you weren’t a
threat
to her having
a good day
or good time
you would start
to see her
stance soften
shoulders relax
her intense
challenging stare
into your eyes
would change
and become
very inviting
beckoning you
to look back
deep into her
shades of blue
where if you
weren’t careful
you could
wander in
and get
lost
and if you
were lucky
enough
to keep her
so engaged
that she gave
you a smile
that hard facade
she wore as
a mask
would fall away
and the delicate
lines
of her face
would capture
your gaze
and you would
never have
believed
you could have
ever
seen her
as anything
other than
a woman…
