     “His Flaw”

A shy smile
from a confident
girl,
embarrassed
by the fact
he’s able to
rattle her
with just a
casual glance
not many guys
give her pause
and only a
few
of the ones
that do
can hold her
attention
after said pause
for more than
a heart beat
or two,
but he has
something about
him
that she doesn’t
like
matter of fact
there is something
about him
she hates
but she just
can’t figure out
what it is,
she gives him
a closer look
a little bit
of ink
poking out
from his short
sleeve tee shirt
not some
overly crowded
scribbles
fighting for space
on his skin
but a few
clean lines
of what she’s
guessing
is of a quote
from some
heroic cause,
she finds her
eyes
drifting back to
his shirt
make that his
very tight
tee shirt
making it
impossible
for her
not to notice
the natural
ripples
of his body
underneath it
as if she
threw a stone
into a pond
and watched them
make their way
to its edges,
but that wasn’t
it
he can’t help
the way his
shirt
rides against his
body
feeling it only
fair
she comes to
his defense,
she could hear
him
talking with his
friend
using complete
sentences
with multi
syllable words
to push forward
a well thought
out
and defined
comment
she had to
hold herself back
from making a
rebuttal
to the strong
points he made
in his argument,
no it wasn’t
that he held
an opposing view
to hers
that wasn’t the
reason for her
dislike
but she was
growing tired
of this game
she felt
she had to
find out what
it was about
him
that bothered her
so much,
she forced herself
to continue watching
him
his hair had
an unkempt look
not the kind
where you spend
an hour
sculpting in
a pound of
product
to make it
seem like
you didn’t care
how your hair
fell
she could tell
the difference
and he just
didn’t,
his whole look
was one of
simplicity
she thought
as she let
a sharp
yelp
slip out of
her mouth
after he said
something funny,
she closed her
book
her lunch hour
over
having to head
back to the
office
and remind a
mouthy
junior exec
how you talk
in front of
your boss
whether he was
right about the
client
or not,
she takes on
her best
boardroom walk
as she goes
by him
on her way
out the door
wanting to keep
her eyes forward
but her curiosity
wins out
she tilts her
head
in his direction
his blue eyes
look up
in to hers
and he smiles
an unassuming
soft smile
one without
any hidden
agenda
only meant to
brighten her day
causing her to
pause again
speechless
as she soaks
in his blue,
two beats later
she finds her
step
and heads out
the door
her confident
walk
a little wobbly
as she finally
puts her finger
on his
flaw
“I never liked,
blue eyes”
she says
weakly,
as she turns
around
trying to catch
one last look
of him
before the door
closes
behind her…
