“Elephant Ears”

He was so
tired
of all the
bickering
and backstabbing
that was now
part of his
daily routine
at work,
it takes
so much energy
to fight back
against all the
personal attacks
that have been
breaking over
him
for the last
three months,
he received
his usual
indirect
early morning
greeting of
“Here comes the
dude,
that don’t do
s---”
a favored comment
from a loud
mouthed lady
known to most
as “Elephant Ears”
a nickname
that has caught
on
for various reasons
the most obvious
being her
satellite dish
size ears,
a memo
had been sent
out
asking us to
keep the doors
and windows
shut
when she is
on the warehouse
floor
any incoming gust
of wind
clocked at 5 MPH
or more
causes her head
to twist into
a horrendous
fashion
which would be
great
if you were
playing charades
with her
and she was
acting out the
“Exorcist”
but other than
that
it is just
flat out disgusting,
the other less
visible
elephant reference
is that she
loves to blow
her own horn
she spends the
whole day
trumpeting on
about how great
she is
and how
everybody loves
her
so conceded
she doesn’t even
notice
the other workers
trying not to
choke on their
own vomit
as they try
to sneak by
unnoticed
we keep a
stack of brown
paper lunch bags
nearby
for those of
us
that can’t re-swallow
our own bile,
there is one
positive attribute
attached to her
nonstop horn
blowing
it cuts down
on the amount
of filth
and lies
that normally
gush forth
out of her
mouth
about the other
lowly creatures
she has the
misfortune
to have working
around her,
it’s hard not
to feel sorry
for her
the sad little
stances
she takes
as if she was
trying to act
tough
on a third
grade playground
which to be
fair
is as far
as her mind
has ever traveled,
you can’t help
but wonder
if her world
was f----d up
when she was
a kid
stealing away
all the soft
parts
of her personality
leaving behind
big gaps
that when she
tried to fill
them
all she had
lying around
in abundance
was hate,
he turns
and looks towards
the other end
of the warehouse
where her childish
actions
are in full
swing
her feeble
way
of shouting out
“Look at Me”
“Look at Me”
he tries to
take the advice
of the many
others
also suffering
under her wrath
just ignore her
they all say
don’t bother to
listen
as she lets
her mouth
run on
a verbal
garbage disposal
that only works
in reverse
no need to
give her
any kind of
a response
it just gets
her
all upset
and confused
unable to think
of any other
recourse
other than to
lash out
in all directions
an atom bomb
of evil
wiping out
all those
wandering through
her blast zone
regardless of
age
or stature
too many
innocent lives
at risk
so he rarely
takes the
opportunity
to poke her
even when he
has
a sharp stick
in hand
and the current
situation
would justify
it,
he rubs his
tired eyes
as he walked
past her
lowering his
gaze
as he enters
the factory
floor
able to feel
the chip shots
she takes at
him
as if he was
wearing a target
on his back,
the verbal
barbs
begin to lessen
as he disappears
into a column
of the rank
and file
and she takes
aim
at some other
poor soul,
burdened now
with a very
long day
standing before
him
an eternity
of a slow
painful death
till one of
the guys
breaks through
the wall
that time built
with a joke
“did you see,
the collar on
old Elephant Ears
blouse?
one good gust
of wind today
and I swear
those ears
in combination
with that collar
and she will
lift up off
the ground”
laughter
rolls over the
group
as a young
lady
throws in her
variation
of the same
joke
pulling a new
thread
that starts to
grow
as it makes
it’s way
down the line
of people,
others with their
own angle
of the same
joke
joining in
as the laughter
continues on
people start
to peel off
the morning
march
to their work
stations
other
people still
piping in with
comments
unwilling to
let the joke
die,
he has a
grin on his
face
as he heads
into his box
of misery
maybe today
won’t be so
bad
there is something
to be said
about camaraderie
united against
a common evil
well if they
can face down
the day
with a smile
so could he,
he begins to
work on his
simplistic task
while piloting
his mind
to some distant
astral plane
trying to find
the answers to
those philosophical
questions
that have eluded
mankind
for the last
millennium
as his hands
work on,
when all of
a sudden
he starts to
laugh
as that joke
comes back
into his head
“lift her up,
off the ground”
he says
with a big
smile,
as the tic-tock
of time
beats a little
faster
for a change…
