“Numb”

She hadn’t planned
on a long
weekend
but after calling
out
for work
on Thursday
it didn’t make
any sense
to force herself
into playing a
role
on Friday
she couldn’t
convince herself
into believing
she was ready
to play
so she let
Friday
slip away
as well,
another 24-hour
period
that just disappeared
from her life
leaving nothing
behind
no memories
or sticky notes
to mark it’s
passing,
two days gone
with the weekend
up a head
and she still
hasn’t found
herself,
she drifted into
Saturday
still lost
unable to grasp
onto
any of the
threads
hanging down
from the day
above her
one that evolved
around her
as if she
wasn’t even
there
encapsulated
in the middle
of a day
she didn’t
belong in,
she tries to
connect
to the afternoon
sun
it’s rays
running down
the length of
her bare legs
but she can’t
feel
it’s warmth
lightly caressing
her milky white
skin
a permanent
cold chill
runs through
her body
one that she
hasn’t been
able to shake
for the better
part of a
year,
she can’t even
remember
the last time
a hot summer
sun
beat down on
her
and she got
even a tingle
from its brilliant
light,
she wished
that she could
just walk to
the sun
everyday
getting a little
closer
till she was
able to feel
it’s hot breath
on her face
or step off
into the fiery
liquid gas pools
that make up
it’s heart,
maybe then
she’ll know what
it’s like to
feel something
once again,
besides
just being
numb
to the world
around her...
