“The Doorway”
It had just
started to rain
as she stood
before him
defiant
making her stand
on a day
she hadn’t planned
on participating in,
her green eyes
intense
his brown eyes
wide open
with surprise
as he barred
the doorway
to his home
with a very
thick right arm
that had a
full sleeve of
some very impressive
ink
telling the tale
of the “Seven Samurai”
from his shoulder
to his wrist
which she is
now
grabbing on to
with all her
might
trying to forcibly
remove the limb
that is impeding
her progress
towards the answer
that she’s sure
is somewhere in
the other room,
the rain coming
straight down
on top of
her
as she tries
again to grasp
his arm
with her small
hand
hiding the strain
from her face
as her efforts
to budge it
fail
“Move It”
she tells him
with a look
that would make
you think hard
before you told
her no
but he just
shakes his head
no
captivated by the
ongoing story
of her clothes
and how the
rain
is effecting them,
she jumps into
the air
coming down hard
on his arm
with her elbow
and all 113 pounds
of her attitude
behind it
but it’s like
hitting a wall
sending a rattle
through her whole
frame
knocking all the
loose raindrops
free
from the fabric
of her clothes
and the various
exposed parts
of her body,
he gives her
a smile
not in jest
but for her fire
and determination
these are some
of the things
he loves about
her,
“Look,
I know you’ve
got another woman
in there
so just admit
it
and drag her
out
and we can
end it all
right now”
she challenges
him,
the green in
her eyes
starting to mix
with the red
of the truth
wishing it was
all a mistake
that he could
undo
but he just
looks at her
unmoved by her
threats
or her force
not willing to
deny anything
or talk his
way
out of it,
not that she’s
surprised
he’s never used
his words
to deceive anyone
for as long
as she’s known
him
and that was
one of the
things
she loved about
him,
she’s at a
loss
unsure of what
else
she can do
as he watches
the patterns of
wetness
on her clothes
start to grow
spreading out
along all the
surfaces
exposed upwards
to the sky
not feeling the
need
to do anything
more
then to just
wait it out,
the top of
her shoulders
soaked through
along with her
left arm
which is still
reaching out
clamped onto his,
her hair
matted down
from the rain
it’s thick strands
being pulled down
across her face
and sticking to
her skin
as the water
runs along them
like rivers
tiny droplets
clinging to her
eyelashes
yet
in the middle
of all that’s
going on
he can’t help
but take in
how sexy she
looks
as she stands
there,
the rain
running down her
face
dripping off
multiple points
on her body
looking so beautiful
wearing a
one of a kind
look
crafted by mother
nature,
neither of them
said a word
when the partially
closed front door
was pulled wide
open
standing behind
his out stretched
arm
was a woman
she had a
number of her
own tattoos
wearing a pair
of shorts
a bikini
top
and flip flops
and said in
a exasperated voice
“Dude,
I can’t wait
any longer,
I have to
get to work”
she kissed him
on the cheek
and then slid
under his arm
out the door
dashing between
the raindrops
to her car
a slight splattering
of drops
across the front
of her body,
then rolling down
the passenger window
and leaning towards
them she hollered
“Dude,
she’s soaked to
the bone
let her inside
before she catches
pneumonia”
then her car
stereo kicks in
as they stand
staring at each
other
he drops his
arm
but she makes
no move to
try and enter
the truth having
made it’s self
known
has effectively
killed her inner
spirit
the faint traces
of red
that were creeping
into her eyes
now dominates
their once bright
surface
their green sparkle
hiding underneath
as the other
woman
slips from the
scene,
she opens her
mouth
just a little
to speak
strangely aware
of the water
running along a
well positioned
strand of hair
catching the corner
of her now
open mouth
her tongue trying
to push the
wet strand of
hair
out of her
mouth
as she thinks
about what it
is
she wants to
say,
but she can’t
push the hair
from her mouth
with her tongue
or come up
with the right
words
to close out
the day,
as he silently
stands there
watching the angle
of the rain
change against her
body
the heat
radiating from
her anger
dissolves
sending a cold
chill through her,
her face
cold and wet
as she runs
her hand across
it
pulling the loose
strands of hair
from the corner
of her mouth,
the strong beats
of the car
stereo
still pouring out
the rolled down
passenger window
of the other
woman
as she walks
in the opposite
direction
with her face
turned towards
the sky,
the rain starts
coming down
harder
beating a rhythm
of its own
as it strikes
her drenched
and dripping
body
slowly fading
out
the sounds of
music
as she tries
to drown herself
in the rain…
