     “Only Words”

She didn’t need
the world anymore
rebuffed
one time too
many
by life
when she rose
high
above the rest
and tried to
shine
just another bright
twinkle
in an already
crowded
Hollywood sky,
fame had been
a given for
her
she had did
her part
put in her
time
with all the
right people
in all the
right ways
collecting the
much needed
pieces
to navigate
across the board,
she got her
hand stamped
at life’s front
door
showing she paid
it’s cover charge
ready now
to move on
and up
to her rightful
place
in the standings
on societies
chosen list,
but those coveted
pieces
when snapped
together
didn’t create
the kind of
personalized
back drop
for her life
that she was
expecting
no yellow brick
roads
twisting through
strawberry
fields,
her golden ticket
didn’t even get
her
to the front
of the line
at Hollywood’s
second tier
hot spots
on a slow
night,
all those promises
made
for obligations
she kept
didn’t have any
value
when she tried
to cash them
in
a massive oversight
on her part
a common
misconception
preyed a pond
on their part,
they were
only words
but they were
the words
she wanted to
hear
the ones that
could do the
most damage
to her,
she didn’t need
the world
anymore
it’s bright lights
weren’t going to
cast her shadow
across the
Hollywood Hills
the only words
she’ll ever be
remembered for
were scrawled
on the back
of a cocktail
napkin
still clutched
in her left
hand
along with
an empty bottle
of pills
in her right,
“F--- It,
I Quit”
was all it
said…
