Those Revolutionary Days, Hull 2018

Are the kids taught local history,
Do today's children know
About the Triple Trawler Tragedy
That  happened fifty years ago?
Are they told of Kingston Peridot,
St. Romanus, Ross Cleveland,
And The Headscarf Revolitionaries,
That brave and fearless band

Yvonne Blenkinsop, Lil Bilocca
Christine Jenkinson, Mary Deness
Four local working women who
Faced the pressure and the stress
To fight for better conditions for
Their menfolk away at sea
Facing abuse and resistance,
Pressured just to let things be.

Are they told of the casualties,
Of the fifty eight lives lost
To add to the many thousands
More that deep sea fishing cost.
Are they told of the tragedies
Are they taken around the docks
Shown the few remaining buildings
And what remains of the locks?

The old buildings are going,
Left to tumble down from disrepair
Month by month by passing month
Less and less remains to see there.
The Hessle Road community
More and more dispersed
Industry rather than homes
In that area now coming  first.

A near deserted Hessle Road
Where that community used to be
Very little sign these days
Of the importance of the sea.
A sad sad road to travel down
These dark winter nights
Just just the occasional working girl
Waiting under the street lights.

We should be proud of our History
Make sure that it's well taught,
Keep them all in our memory,
Don't let their loss be for naught.
Here's to the Three Day Millionaires,
Those  Bell Bottomed boys and men,
And Big Lil and her Revolutionaries,
For we'll never see their like again.
