a part of me goes with him
when he walks out the door
I can see his steps
and how his hips move in his jeans
I would know him from behind a whole block away
in the morning
I inhale deeply
while I watch him sleeping
his scent filling my nostrils
he smells warm and musty
like a cat napping in the sun
with a self-satisfied smile on his face
I know him
by a certain jangle of his keys
in a crowd of people
my ears focus and pick him out
my mind estimating when
he will come around the corner
in the car he hums
as if it were a reflex
sometimes he sings
and I join in
I like a man who sings
often he doesn't know
I'm admiring his profile
in awe of who I see
as my heart quickens
at night when I lie awake
I listen to him breathing
sometimes he laughs when he is asleep
and I smile
I have known him for a long while
still there's always more to know
and I like him
more than I started out to
which was a lot
sometimes when I think of him
it feels like a swooning crush
I get weak-kneed and sigh
and think about luck
and how maybe
it has not passed me by at all
but entered on two feet
with wide shoulders
and arms that surround me.
