The Finisher's Song

I'm the Finisher
the one who holds on
when she should no longer touch
things and words and memories
immutable and singular stuff
not of dreams
but more like nightmares

I'm the Finisher
I memorize people
and things are not intangibles
I linger in the essence
its essential
yet,
I've been told I stay too long

I'm the Finisher
I stare into space
until it no longer lingers
everything diminishes
grows shorter
even my hair
but somehow
I must finish all of this

Why do I need to be an occupier
of any stage
remember every moment
every anguish or rage
every love and every single age
and all to which it attached?

you only go round the bases once
I won't be coming back
is that the facts
there's no guarantee
to get it all right
even when
you finish

something's left
someone's left
undone.
