The Idea of Me

Original Contemporary Poetry by author, Jean Parr

"The Idea of Me"

Who is he in love with, broken and damaged?
Is he in love with me?
With all my emotional baggage
Or, is he in love with the idea of me?

We met under unusual circumstances, neither trying to impress
I thought he was attractive, but distant and had no idea of his interest or his glances
He was very shy and says he was enamored by my beauty, or did he just want to possess?
When I finally asked the question, "Do you like me more than a friend?" he responded, "Yes" and wanted romance

Now it's been seven months and I've seen my roses lose their blossoms
It seems like that is about the length of time my relationships last, my future looks grim
We argue more often than not and spend most days in silence, stubbornly refusing to discuss the problem
It appears that my shininess has grown dull and my reality looks dim

He's been cheated on in previous relationships
But, he doesn't understand that although I've stepped out in the past, it's never been on someone I've had a real commitment with; seriously, why would I cheat and then go with him on an international trip?
