Poetic Verses

Golden Years

They say these are my golden years
and that I should be proud
I wasn't sure that's what they said
because it wasn't loud

I think my hearing's failing
and likewise my eyes
I'm just not accustomed to
my white hair disguise

I masquerade quite often
in this faltering get up
for discounts at the deli
and places where I sup

I quit my daily job
to get my government pay
Sleep in every morn
and nap during the day

I hire people to mow my lawn
and to clean my gutters
And laugh to see them on the ladder
‘cause it used to give me shudders

Morning-coffee with my besties
cocktails in afternoon
I'm home before sundown
Won't drive by light of the moon

I go shopping to the stores
on senior discount day
And use large button phones
with readable text display

I buy depends or Metamucil
for whichever end fails
And visit many doctors
with many many ails

I tell my many stories
over and over again
And when I take a breath
my audience cries "amen"

I sit in front of the flat screen
to watch my daily shows
And when they aren't on
my anger really grows

Am I a grumpy old person
to myself I wonder
‘cause when I don't get my way
anger comes like thunder

These are my golden years
but they feel more like rust
I need to have more fun
before I turn to dust

These are my golden years
quite tarnished and dented
My body is all crumpled
and demeanor is fermented
