X marks the spot

So many uses for the simple letter "x",
From excite to xylaphone, it surely does flex,
If used with o, it can convey a message amorous,
In the word Xanadu, it even seems glamorous.

If followed by mas it means the Son of God,
Yet listed among the alphabet, it scarely rates a nod.
Among the ancient Romans, it meant the number ten,
Has any other letter so many uses among men?

Illiterate frontiersmen used x to make "their mark",
Sometimes on legal papers, other times on bark.
Those making maps to places others knew not,
Knew their readers understood X marked the spot.

So remember well the lessons learned from this humble letter,
And consider if you yourself could have done any better.
