Quitting

It's the making of a Navy SEAL
Trainees describe as hell
Though any one of them could quit
With the ringing of a bell.

A bell that's ever present there
Inside the SEAL compound
Which tells them all that someone caved
Each time they hear its sound.

For the training is barbaric
And the dropout rate is high
Which makes the ringing of that bell
Not hard to justify.

That they could bow out gracefully
A way of saving face
And without an explanation why
Would suffer no disgrace.

But quitting can't be justified
Should they give up their dreams
Regardless of how difficult
The end affirms the means.

But for us, life's not that simple
Though to quitting, we are prone
For when we are most tempted
We have to carry on.

But in a sense, we're much the same
With our own concepts of hell
But we, unlike the Navy SEAL
Can't quit by ringing a bell.
