This past weekend I came to spend
Briefly my time a moment lend
A silent pause in memory
Of their service eternally
They each answered a call to arms
When peace called out to save from harm
Those with less than strength their own
Much need indeed war does condone
On foreign lands at sea as well
Upon skylines their stories spelled
More than presence to live and tell
Of victories as war is hell
Some came and left all that they lived
Both young and old their lives they'd give
To save mankind, to serve the cause
To prolong life on sphere at war
Many would leave their all on soil
Some would return with minds theirs toiled
Of brothers left where carnage spilled
Blood of nations this bitter pill
Those that lived came back to homes
That held and hold what war had sown
Heroes each one that came to rest
At peace this day much earned no less
I strolled along these monuments
Pure white as snow that now attest
What lives they had before time came
To etch briefly on stones proclaimed
Not far from me and older man
Came with walker, with heart in hand
To place upon of them they knew
Leaving presence their shadow drew
I watched and heard him speak upon
Loved one once here who now has gone
Words whispered soft before their leave
Became sought out peace this day appeased
In closing I saw father and sons
Mothers daughters, grandkids each one
Bestow true love on sacred ground
Where souls now rest all heaven bound
