Snapshots

Just a stolen snapshot of
A busy city centre life,
Instants frozen in time,
A young man and his wife
Each securely holding
A child by the hand
Contented self contained
A happy little family band,

Strolling past the empt shop
Where the lone beggar stays
Pitching for small coins during
His long uncertain days.
His sleeping bag behind him
Stretched out on the floor
His few possessions stacked
Against the boarded shop door.

A snapshot of that family
Who, with not a bat of an eye,
Unaware of that beggar
Casually strolled by.
It's such a common thing,
Not at all unusual to meet
The helpless stares of
The homeless on the street.

Just a snapshot of a phone box
Where a dealer meets to deal
With his clients who in despair
May have to rob and steal
To feed their growing habit,
All carried out in full view
Of that young family and
City shoppers like me and you.

Another snapshot of society
As inequality steadily grows,
A calculated weapon of austerity
Which the common man well knows.
And the people up in Parliament, who
Responsible for this state of affairs.
Their living subsidised, large expense
Accounted, feel its no concern of theirs.
