Selected Poems

Juneteenth

Amazing Grace stands epaule, after the storm
outside another shuttered main street store
on a puddle darkened side walk

Our nine year old port-o-princess
dangles the straight A blue ribbon award
wearing a bright crinoline tulle graduation dress.

She guards left-over second-hand rain
dripping down a morning torn awning.
Grace tracks the intermittent pattern-less drops.

She leans back and forth on one forward foot
wavering, catching each wander spurt
as it flees the sky, to pitter into her palm.

Each drop is the precious first time
message filled with light and life.
Unaware and enthralled, she plays.

Her father keeps watch
while her mother, away, loads the family car.
Summer freedom has started.
All are smiles, full of hope, as any lunch-time passerby.
