Not the Grand Reunion

It was not the grand reunion
I had pictured in my mind
But rather, a strained encounter with
The ones I left behind.

For I had been away awhile
In a most barbaric land
Trying to survive a war
I did not understand.

I'd envisioned warm embraces
That did not quickly come
Since I was too standoffish
Feeling lost and somewhat numb.

So I sat alone away from them
And pretended all was well
When all I wanted was to run
Or crawl back in my shell.

But eventually, I adjusted
To my home and family
Eating pinto beans and apple pie
And drinking Mama's tea.

No, it wasn't the grand reunion
I had pictured in my mind
Though I was glad to be back with
The ones I left behind.
