Family Outcast

He became the family outcast
Who bore the mark of Cain
Which almost got the best of him
Because of mental strain.

To them, he was a rebel
Who seldom went along
Even for the sake of harmony
When he felt something was wrong.

But since he dared to take a stand
Squarely on his own two feet
They called him crass and headstrong
And often indiscreet.

But he finally saw the urgency
That something must be done
Or he would die a bitter man
Befriended by no one.

So, he cast his cares upon the Lord
As if to roll the dice
And found the inward peace he craved
That pearl of greatest price.

Now the angst is all behind him now
Gone is the mental strain
Though he remains the outcast who
Still bears the mark of Cain.
