Hangovers

Hangover's hammers
Pounding persistent pain
Deep down inside I
My suffering brain.
The  set room clock creeping,
At less than half speed,
Slowly slowly slowly
Towards the sleep that I need.

A few of the lads
Are in the same state,
We all left the pub
Far far too late.
The concentrated effort
We'd all made
To be there in time
For the works parade.

And then this dreaded Mid.
Just inching along,
Outside  just starting
The dawn birdsong.
Rush across  to  Jim
Give him surreptitious prod
The daft B was starting
To noticeably wilt and nod.

Just stay awake lads
For just another little bit.
Sleeping watch draws nearer
And that welcoming pit.
The hangover's easing,
We just about got it right,
We made it together
Through that long, long night.
