Wimbledon Singles

Young men get old too soon,
Fighting to keep their place,
Harassed by younger men
Trying to aid their fall from grace.
The champions are those
Who know when to stop
Retiring from the game
While still at the top.

Avoiding the defeat bpy
That rising  name
That hastens the slide
And increases his fame.
Then the Veteran's Circuit,
That sporting zoo
Parading them there
Still in the public's view.

Too old at thirty five
Yet soldiering on,
All skills retained
But some speed gone,
Or the commentary box
A good steady choice
Adding an expert opinion
From  an experienced voice.

Still treated with respect
Still part of the scene
Maybe deep down still thinking
Of things that might have been,
Taking the chance to reminisce
Of that long passed time
When they strode the world
At the crux of their prime.

Far too young to retire,
Still treated with respect
They dominate their game
From a less demanding aspect.
For top class tennis really is
A younger man's game,
And they get old far too soon
In that hard drive for fame.
