Goonhilly earth station celebrated today
For it was `Arthur` who happened to relay
Pictures of Apollo 11 landing on the moon
Back on 20th July, 1969 that very afternoon.
On that Sunday afternoon 50 years ago
Neil Armstrong gave us on earth quite a show,
He was the first person to step on to the moon
A successful mission that never came too soon.
`Arthur` based on Goonhilly Downs in Cornwall
Was a giant of a satellite nothing about it small,
It beamed images of the landing far and wide
Millions of people watched this with joy and pride.
Now 50 years later at this very earth station
It remembered its history and had a celebration,
With lots to see and do and music well into the night
The lasers on the satellite dishes were a colourful sight.
We were staying just across the road from this event
Although it was something to which we never went,
The tickets though expensive were all sold out
It certainly was an occasion without a doubt.
