Errands (WHAT ARE YOUR UNOFFICIALLY APPOINTED ERRANDS?)

it is Spring
my feet seem happier
the sunlight
is gentle
so is the breeze

I notice how a Chickadee
is nested in the eaves
of a fast-food venue
woven into her nest are
expired fries

the street is filled
with her music

chick-a-dee-dee-dee
chick-a-dee-dee-dee

the older Dog sits
all too patiently
tethered to an immovable object
he
does not like being immovable

wishing I had steak
or a hamburger to give him
I murmur kindnesses
what a boy you ARE

he looks up
blood shot eyes assessing me
then I remember my half sandwich
glance around
and slip him the middle of it

I grin
not guiltily
feeling my steps growing lighter
as he licks his chops

a small cat meows
I look into her
notice the dullness there
in her coat and eyes
I carry my sack of groceries
inside is a self-opening
can of tuna

kitty- kitty -kitty
she meow-paws her way over to me
I open the tin's contents
in an out-of-the-way-corner
creating a make-shift care
safe from the busy street

meow-wow-wow-mewow mumbley-munch
she eats
her active whiskers flexing

I watch
and grin again

then carefully
because I am older
I skip away
not caring if anyone sees.
