Didn't You Learn That First Lesson In Kindergarten?

people get it wrong
often
but they don't admit they do
its laughable and sad
it provides me with great amusement
and much frustration
I'd like to say

hey
quit it
wake up

but that's not my job
its theirs

when folks get angry
when change comes along
and rears its unfamiliar face
they rail and curse
especially at the messenger
when some change is gonna do all of us good

good is not the providence of the few
but of the many
there are some who got all the eggs
and some who don't gots any
and they are starving

once I lived in a nice
quiet
mostly unpolluted neighborhood
where I felt a better sense of calm
now I dwell in a low-rise
by the highway
a place where one year
7 souls lost their lives
in a single winter
in quiet desperation

change could change all that
you got to share the fat
and not be the one who's got all the blubber
nor be the one to blubber and carry on
when someone asks you to share
a little piece of happiness
and to claim it only belongs
to those like you

we all get to get a little piece of the peace too
even before we get to heaven

I wonder if you know
how foolish
how greedy
how woefully grubby-handed needy
you come across
as you thrash your bodies round
and raise up high your over-holy hands
and assume I want some of yours
when you cannot own the land
forever
you got to share
didn't you learn that first lesson
in kindergarten?
