Rising

She is Rising
You raped her
You told yourself stories
Like she wanted it too
You belittled her
And she went on
With a shame that
Belonged to you
Not her.

But it wasn't your fault
It was your father
And your brother
And your friends
And the culture
Of silence.

Some of you thought
It was funny
Some of you saw it
As a college rite
Of passage.
But it wasn't your fault
It was in your youth
And that was then
And this is now.

Really this isn't about
You.
This is about us.
This is about her.
And we are rising.

Careful because when
You give us no choice
To defend ourselves
Or our daughters
Or sisters
We will rise up
Not as men do
But as women do.
We have a power
Not seen in a millennium
But you are about to.

Ladies rise up.
Fight like a girl.
Fight like a woman.
Fight like a pack of wild
Unbridled powerful
Pride.

Men,
Join us...
Not disempowered boys
Who have to take
What they cannot earn.

This is not an
Us and them
Problem.
This is Our
Problem.

But we will never
Find the solution
From the problem.

We must treat our children
Differently
So that no little boy
Nurtures a wound so deep
He has to take the love
He wasn't given.
So that no little girl
Has to grow up
In a world where rape
Means she is immediately
Disbelieved, and questioned,
And shamed.

This sickness of pain
Is so pervasive
That 3 and 5 year olds
Have to answer
Good touch and
Bad touch
Before they can
Verbalize it.

This
Must
Stop.

Ladies time
To rise to the occasion
Because the men
Have failed us
But it was never
Their job...
We've all heard the
Reasons and excuses.

Ladies rise
As we do as a group
Collectively the power of
Us.
As women.
Rise and change
The rape culture
To a love culture...

The answer is
US.
