Pretty Flamingo

They past is another country
But as life moves on
It's good sometimes to recall
Once good times long gone.
I called her my Pretty Flamingo,
The current Manfred Mann song,
Straight and slim and tall with
Legs that went on and on and on,

And that not quite strutting walk
As she so confidently strolled by
it was only when I got to know her
I discovered she was very  shy
The apparent confident girl
Hid behind. A radiant smile
And the confident way that she
walked  and dressed with style.

She would curl in my arms
Snuggle agaInst my chest
Put my self control almost daily
To its  almost ultimate test.
So far and no further
A limit to where we could go
She would only play by her rules
her no really did mean no.

Almost weeping with frustration
Both curled up there
Coming back down to Earth
In Her big old armchair.
The Manfred Mann song
Would pound through my brain
Barely controllable desire
Driving me almost insane.

A meteoric romance of passion
That really couldn't carry on
In despair we quarrelled badly
And Pretty Flamingo was gone.
Sometimes I would see her
Across the busy street
Sometimes even smile
And our eyes even meet,

And my unspoken plea
Receive an unspoken no
And in my mind I'd hear
Manfred's Pretty Flamingo
Not seem her for years
Is she still  alive or dead
Doesn't matter really because
At times she surfaces in my head
