Be attentive unto my words, Incline your ear to what I say; Not for to be falling backwards, Letting yourself to go astray. Let them not escape from your sight, As you keep them within your heart; Maintain direction what is right, Letting your lips and tongue impart. Let them not depart from your eyes, For they are life to those who find; Giving wisdom to make you wise, Knowledge to satisfy your mind. Keep your heart with all diligence, For from it are issues of life; Persist ever with vigilance, That will help you cope with the strife. The springs of life from it will flow, As you put away crooked speech; Shoddy talk can easily grow, Deceiving of those you outreach. Put away from your froward tongue, Cleansing talk from your perverse lips; Let not vulgar language be flung, Drink no more poison that one sips. Keep your eyes looking straight ahead, Gazing at what is right in front; What your eyes see your mind is fed, From your searching will end the hunt. Muse the direction of your feet, Being a straight and narrow path; Because of a detour could greet, God having judgment with His wrath. Do not swerve to the left or right, Turn your foot away from evil; Continue straight unto the light, Which steers away from the devil. Copyright © 2019 Richard Newton Sherrer Vote for this poem
