Shedding Your Skin

shedding my skin
I've never thought of myself
hissing
like a snake
wriggling on my belly and being
in need of so much warmth and light

shedding my skin
is at times
like peeling a stubborn wound
one which wants to heal itself
yet continues to ooze and weep

shedding my skin
is like misplacing all of my clothes
then wandering off into a dark dream
knowing where you are but feeling at sea
with no compass

shedding my skin
is like pulling back my gums
to extract long eye teeth
with sharp shining pincers
the white room I'm in
becomes a throbbing amoeba
waiting to swallow me whole

shedding my skin
is something I've tried often
the surface of me is loose and wagging,
as useless as a limp webbed-wing

I want to pick at the puckering
of skin hanging
why is it that
change has no ending?

I want to find a detour
a way around it
my skin is so worn
it needs mending...
still I search for the illusive
swab of tenderness
which I might ply

shedding my skin
is much harder when
I try and try and try

so I whisper an aside
from the stage
to the audience:
(just let it be done
and over...)
