A Long Time Ago

A long time ago in a land far away,
When I was far younger than I am today;
My hopes and dreams well within reach;
Like seashells strewn on some forgotten beach.

The years passed by in a slow, gentle wave
And hopes and dreams I neglected to save.
Slipping through my curious, wandering hands
Like the ceaseless, ever shifting sands.

One day I paused to glance around,
Shocked and amazed at what I found.
While I wandered here and there, ever yearning;
The world on which I stood continued turning.

The visions and dreams that shone so bright;
Like stars that glisten on a cloudless night.
Like a mirage have faded in the light of day,
While I whiled precious years away.

Now I am old and gray; dreams alone remain
Of all my plans and hopes, time has been the bane.
So heed the words of this foolish old man;
Do not waste your time on nothing but a plan.
