CALABAR RAIN

It rains slowly
It rains steadily
It rains hail and storms
It's Calabar rain
We all queue
I and my colleagues
One after the other
With plantain leaves for shield
Our modern umbrellas;
Coco-yam leaves, our shades
The gutters are full
The danks and banks also
It fills and floods the roads
It pulls down Gmelinas
Motorists must beware
My wiper stops because of overwork
It is the same rain
That made a pregnant woman
With a baby in a farm
A distance away
Lose her baby to the flood;
It is under this same rain
A pregnant woman farmer
Put to birth
Got out the after-birth
And swam with her new born
Safely home
It rains fire
It rains brim
It takes away school children
The danks are filled
The banks are filled
We race to the river
Like floods.
