The Hull steam trawler Norman
Lost with all its crew
But for one lucky lad
Who managed to pull through.
In our city people mourned
But fishing carried on
Just another ship and crew
To add to those already gone.
My husband had been found
So the policeman said
Then came back and told me
Not alive but dead.
All those hours of waiting
How slowly that time passed,
And then my hopes were raised
Just to have them dashed.
The guilty joy I'd felt
Because he was alive
Amongst the newly widowed
Of those who'd not survived.
And then they came back
And took my joy away
It was if I'd had to suffer
A second widowing day.
I joined with all the others
And together we all cried
For those lost loved ones
Who had so cruelly died.
The Steam Trawler Norman
Lost with all its crew
But for one lucky lad,
October fourth, nineteen fifty two.
