Traveling in my mind
I visit the Battle of Midway
The fear, the terror, the courage
The defeat, the victory—good men
Dead on both sides—If we had lost
I would be speaking Japanese but
Innocent mothers cradled their dead sons
In the atomic ash of Hiroshima to avenge
The death of innocent farm boys from Kansas
Who dangled on fire from the burning ships off
Pearl Harbor—I don’t ask “have we learned” We
Have… “War is Hell.” I ask “Can we get beyond this”
The Ramadan Moon is the same moon over Kansas—
Live and let live
