What Exactly Comes Next?

at night
making lists in my head
I'm cocooned in thought
and wondering
what it means
the very definition
of the end

how many are there
like me
thinking thoughts
they'd rather not think

I envy those who don't
count sheep
those who simply drift off
and drift away

days are long
nights even longer
its not merely a function
of the change of season
grasped in the moments
snared in my thoughts
making mincemeat
of the lack of reasons

where will this all lead

the side-goose-stepping
the averting and the aversion
of eyes
the wearing of sunglasses
the dull sameness and the
absence of smiles

walking the sidewalks
but feeling the miles
we're all separate islands
and
what exactly comes next?
