Eurasian Girl, Sussex 1961

A misfit among misfits
Away from family and friends
Wondering was I wrong and
Is this how the adventure ends.
Had I chosen the wrong course
Leaving my little village behind
Wracked with doubt and despair
That overwhelmed my mind.

Sitting on the floor
Beginning to think
I really shouldn't have had
That last but one drink.
Feeling sad,  lost, all alone
Mind in a drunken whirl
When she sat next to me
Unknown Eurasian girl.

I knew I shouldn't be here
I was totally out of place
But I somehow responded
To the smile on her face.
She sat and talked with me
Seemed to understand
My state of despair, gently
Took and held my hand

Laid her head on my shoulder
Somehow brought me release
As we quietly sat there until
Gradually, I felt  at peace.
We sat there just talking
All through that long night
Until a sudden dawn chorus
And the breaking of first light.

She squeezed my hand,
Kissed my cheek,
And we parted then
Each to face their new week.
The next time I saw her
It was from far too far
As she gave me a wave
Across a crowded bar.

Laughter and shouts and
Music playing far too loud
As I tried to reach her side.
Through an unparting crowd.
By the time I reached
The place she'd been
My Eurasian girl was
Nowhere to be seen.

I never knew just why
She came to me that night
But her calming presence
Helped me put things right
My Eurasian girl came,
Helped me  move on
And, having done her bit
Had very quietly gone.
