HOW

I used to love the month
called May...

the snows had left
the robins returned
the flowers bloomed and profused
all passions slowly-burned
the winds more gently called and wooed

May was my reprieve
my reason to believe
that
life might live again
and make itself anew

Now May has other meanings
the kind of acquaintance
I'd rather not renew

would I pretend the years are distant
yet some of them remain
how I'd like to forget
and tuck them into the earth to stay

let the dead
let ghosts stay quieted
let memory be buried down
within the loamy earth
to stay
