MOLECULES

I am made of molecules
and this table is made of molecules
and the lush grass is made of molecules
is there a difference between us?

Does a tree have sentience
Does a table know it was once alive?
That it had friends in the forest?

The oil that makes the pen that allows
me to write
does it know it once was a dinosaur
from other times,
perhaps a T. Rex?

Could the rice and wheat and oats
in my Chex
remember what it was like to be planted
to feel the wind tickling its strands
before it was cut down by a men and his machines?

What does it mean
to be molecules..
to be part of something
to be at different times
alive, no longer and then something else--freed?

Some say
I think too much.
Some say--my head is locked within a dream.

Some say
I mumble random words and thoughts
without knowing what they mean.

But I ask
and I question often
and I observe
and I see more of the surface
than others do not see...

What is the common essence in these molecules
where does the spark of life begin
and how and when and where  does it alter
and become something new
is it still here or
does it cease to be?
matter is matter
and this matter
bothers me...

If a woman has a soul
then is there a soul in the tree?
If an animal does also think and feel
than isn't he like me?

We all share the spark
that is in the molecule
somehow we must share
something alike
that makes us all want to continue living
and being
and share that singular obstinate
inner force
which tells us all
how hard it is
for us to leave.
