Dryad

Born of wildwood, sap coursing through veins,
Nourished by sunlight and torrential rains.
Child of the land in a way no human could ever be;
Living a life unfettered and free.

Related to sidhe, nymph, and forest elf,
Solitary by nature, she keeps to herself.
Standing 'neath sheltering oak or pine;
Scanning the realm for slightest of sign.

Knowing the deadliest of dangers is near;
Mankind, whom even Nature must fear.
Slashing and burning, destroying all they touch;
Nature was wise to fear them so much.

So the first dryad was fashioned, a sentry or guard;
With beauty made famous by poet and bard.
Able to meet mankind on his own terms;
And if needed, leave his body for ants and the worms.
